Welcome to LTJBSA!

Welcome to LTJBSA!

Create your own schedule. Spend summers on the field making money. Receive advanced training by experienced umpires.

Lawrence Umpire Academy is a great way for adults and students age 13+ to earn money while spending time on the baseball and softball field.

Our Cadet Umpire Training course covers the basics in umpiring and controlling a youth softball or baseball game. You’ll learn the rules and how to apply them to real game situations. Taught by NJ District 12 adult umpires with over 20 years of professional experience,  you’ll be certified to work Lawrence Little League games by the end of training.

Cadets set their own game schedule and can work when they are free.   Academy graduates earn $30 for each LTJBSA game they umpire, with bonus pay issued for reaching certain game totals within the season.  Games are weeknights from 6-8pm, and Saturdays at 11 or 1pm. Sunday and Tournament work is available at higher pay.

Lawrence Little League Coaches may also audit this course for free.

By registering, you have committed to attending the Winter 2024 training class at the dates listed below, and to work either softball or baseball games as a cadet umpire for the LTJBSA during the 2024 season. In exchange for this commitment, Lawrence Little League is paying all fees associated with your training, including the purchase of a uniform and umpire equipment. All classes will take place at the Hamilton Library.

FAQs

Will the classes run over time?
NO.  All sessions will start promptly at 6:30 and conclude at 8:00.  Parents, if you want, you can come in for the last 10 minutes of each session although it is not necessary.

The first session says it starts at 6:00.  Why?
The first night you will be receiving your supplies and sizing of your official’s shirt.  In order to start the session at 6:30, we need to get this done before that.

What if I do poorly on the exam?
The exam is a reflection of what you have learned in the class.  Unlike a test in the classroom, when you are on the ball field, you need to know ALL the answers within a split second.  During on-field day, the class will be separated by how well you did on the exam.  We will work with each of the groups differently.

Can I come back year after year?
YES.  And there is no cost to do this.  Some officials have been coming back for 4 and 5 years, each year picking up more tips.  It is also a great way to prepare for the upcoming season.  The more we see of you and can work with you, the more games you may get.

Do you assign me games?
NO.  The class only trains you.  However, by registering via the LTJBSA, you have committed to attending all Winter 2024 training class at the dates listed , and to work either softball or baseball games as a cadet umpire for the LTJBSA during the 2024 season, prioritizing LTJBSA over other leagues. In exchange for this commitment, Lawrence Little League is paying all fees associated with your training, including the purchase of a uniform and umpire equipment.

If I am a returnee, do I need to retake the exam?
It is strongly recommended that you do.  You do NOT have to attend SESSION 1.  There is a BEST on the TEST award for returnees as well as those who are taking the class for the first time.  FYI, High School officials need to take and pass a 50 question exam every year prior to walking onto a field.
