Welcome to LTJBSA!

Lawrence Little League operates baseball divisions at varying age and skill levels each season. Our goal each year is to place players in the appropriate division to provide them a positive experience and to allow them to be grow their skills. These descriptions are a guide, and may be altered based on registration numbers.

Overview: Majors  |  Minors AAA  |  Minors AA  |  Rookies  | Draft and Roster Selection

⚾ ⚾ ⚾

Majors Division

Our most competitive division for our oldest players, featuring full Little League rules including unlimited stealing, dropped third strike, and no limit on runs per inning.

Age: Boys or girls league age 11-12. Players age 8 are not eligible for this division.

Schedule: Teams practice once a week and play one or two games a week. The season is 12 games and may include intra-league play.

Draft and Roster: Team rosters are created annually through a draft. All 12 year-olds are guaranteed placement in this division, but teams may not have more than eight 12-year-olds on a roster.  Since placement on teams is through a blind draft, we do not honor requests to place any child on the same team as a sibling, friend, or coach.

Coaches: Team Managers register through the website and their player is automatically assigned to the team. Assistant coaches are added to the staff of the team their player is drafted onto.

House Rules:  Lineups are set by the Team Manager, and players must play 2 innings in the field during a game.  Full Little League rules apply, including unlimited stealing, unlimited bases on overthrows, and active dropped third strike, infield fly, and balk rules.

Pitching: All player pitched. Pitch Smart guidelines are followed for arm care.

Standings and Playoffs: Playoffs are determined by regular-season record, with a single elimination first round. The finals are the Lawrence World Series, a best 2 of 3 tournament.

Minors AAA Division

A competitive, all player-pitched division for players who played at least one year in the Minors AA league.

Age: Boys or girls league age 9-10. Players age 7 are not eligible for this division.

Schedule: Teams practice once a week and play one or two games a week. The season is 10-12 games and may include intra-league play.

Draft and Roster: Team rosters are created annually through a draft made up of players not selected into the Majors division., Since placement on teams is through a blind draft, we do not honor requests to place any child on the same team as a sibling, friend, or coach.

Coaches: Team Managers register through the website and their player is automatically assigned to the team. Assistant coaches are added to the staff of the team their player is drafted onto.

House Rules:  Lineups are set by the Team Manager, and players must play 2 innings in the field during the bat.  There are a maximum 5 runs scored in an inning except for the 6th inning, where unlimited runs may be scored. Stealing is limited to second and third base, and unlimited bases can be taken on an overthrow. The dropped third strike, infield fly, and balk rules are not active.

Pitching: All player pitched. Pitch Smart guidelines are followed for arm care.

Standings and Playoffs: Playoffs are determined by regular-season record, with a winner-take all championship game.

Minors AA Division

A transition league that prepares players for a full little league game. At the beginning of the season, coaches will pitch in games. As the season progresses, player pitching will be introduced.

Age: Boys or girls league age 8-9. Players age 6 are not eligible for this division.

Schedule: Teams practice once or twice a week and generally play one game a week. The season is 8-10 games and may include intra-league play.

Draft and Roster: Team rosters are created annually through a draft made up of players not selected into the Minors AAA division. Since placement on teams is through a blind draft, we do not honor requests to place any child on the same team as a sibling, friend, or coach.

Coaches: Team Managers register through the website and their player is automatically assigned to the team. Assistant coaches are added to the staff of the team their player is drafted onto.

House Rules:  Lineups are set by the Team Manager, and players may not play the same fielding position for more than 2 innings in the same game.  There are a maximum 5 runs scored in an inning, and umpires (a coach from each team), are encouraged to have a large strike zone.  Stealing is limited to second base only (and only when a player is pitching), and on an overthrow, the runner may only advance one base from where they started when the pitch was thrown. The dropped third strike and infield fly rules are not active.

Pitching: Coach-pitched for first 4 games. Player pitcher is phased in by the midpoint of the season. When players pitch, they must start the inning. After 4 balls by a player, a coach finishes the at-bat (no walks).

Standings and Playoffs: Team records or division standings are not tracked. The division hosts a single elimination tournament at the end of the season, with seedings determined by random draw.

Rookies Division

A coach-pitched league for players with at least one year of Tee Ball experience. Instruction in this division focuses on fielding, team play, and situations.

Age: Boys or girls league age 6-7. Players age 5 are not eligible for this division.

Schedule: Teams practice once or twice a week and generally play one game a week. The season is 8-10 games and may include intra-league play.

Draft and Roster: Team rosters are created annually through a draft made up of players not selected into the Minors AA division. Since placement on teams is through a blind draft, we do not honor requests to place any child on the same team as a sibling, friend, or coach.

Coaches: Team Managers register through the website and their player is automatically assigned to the team. Assistant coaches are added to the staff of the team their player is drafted onto.

House Rules: Lineups are alphabetical by first name and continuous for the season, and players may not play the same fielding position for more than 2 innings in the same game.  To keep the game moving, there is a maximum 8 batters to an inning, and umpires (a coach from each team), are encouraged to have a large strike zone. There is no stealing, and on an overthrow, the runner may only advance one base from where they started when the pitch was thrown.

Pitching: Coach-pitched all season. Batters see a maximum of 8 pitches during an at-bat.

Standings and Playoffs: Team records or division standings are not tracked. The division hosts a friendly tournament at the end of the season, with seedings determined by random draw. All players receive a participation trophy.

Draft & Roster Creation

We use a draft process to create rosters for our Spring seasons. Our goal is to set up teams and divisions that are fair and balanced so we can provide a better learning experience for all players.

For returning players, coaches will track their skill level year-to-year. For new players, we may ask your child to participate in a short workout so the coaches can become familiar with them.

🔴 Waterfall Draft Overview

  1. We use a waterfall draft by Division, with the Division with the oldest ages going first (example: Majors → Minors  AAA→ Minors AA → Rookies.)
  2. Registered Managers for a division are assigned a team name.
  3. Registered, eligible players are organized by age in descending order.
  4. Team Managers' names are drawn randomly out of a hat to determine draft order position.
  5. The draft begins, with managers first selecting from the oldest kids eligible for each division.
  6. The draft continues, with managers drafting successively younger kids from the pool of available players.
  7. Once all roster spots in the division are full, the draft for the next division begins.

During the draft, managers will balance the competitiveness of the division by ensuring certain skill positions are equally distributed (i.e. we don’t allow one team to have 3 catchers while another team doesn’t have any).

🔴 Placement Requests

The use of a draft means that the League and Coaches make the final determination of your player's placement within a specific division or on a roster. This means that although you will be asked to select a Division during the checkout process, the final determination of your player’s placement within a specific division will be made by the League.  Your online selection is used as a guide during our draft process. However, at the conclusion of the draft, they may end up in another division than you requested.

As part of the registration process, you will be asked to acknowledge that we may not honor a request to place your player:

  • On the same team as any other player (including their sibling)
  • On any specific team (exception: players who have families that are team sponsors are automatically placed on that team)
  • With a specific manager, or coach
  • With a team that practices or plays (or doesn't practice or play) at a certain time or day of the week
  • Within a specific division or league
Our Fall Ball programs are more informal and while not guaranteed, we have more latitude to accommodate placement requests. Summer Tournament and Competitive Travel Teams utilize a tryout process for roster selection, not a draft.
